The Sharon Rosita Barber Scholarship was founded in the honor of the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project founding member Sharon Rosita Barber. The Sharon Rosita Barber Scholarship is an award to a deserving high school graduating senior intending to pursue a course of study at a two-year or four-year educational institution. This one-time scholarship of $1700.00, is funded to increase educational opportunities for one African American student.

Our Heritage Center Went Solar!

A collaboration of Shenandoah Valley community organizations took on a project to support and amplify the mission of SVBHP by joining forces in an energy efficiency and solarization project on SVBHP’s Heritage Center. This project hoped to carry out the following activities in order to improve environmental sustainability of their building, reduce the overhead expenses of SVBHP, and make SVBHP more effective at achieving their core mission: Air Sealing and Weatherization, Window Replacement, Additional attic insulation, Installation of a high efficiency HVAC system, and Installation of a 2.8 kW solar system. The initial projected budget for this project was #11,200. The following community organizations have already pledged their financial support of this project: Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley, Shenandoah Chapter of the Sierra Club, Harrisonburg Unitarian Universalists, JZ Engineering, Harrisonburg Carpenter’s Guild, GiveSolar, Voluntary Gas Tax, 50 x 25 Harrisonburg, and Gaines Group Architects.
Upon inspection, it was decided that we would need to install not one but two ductless mini-split systems. Our initial goal was met, but now our projected budget was off by about $5,000.  We are seeking additional community crowdfunding support from individuals, businesses, faith communities and civic organizations to raise the additional funds that are needed to complete this project.  If we exceed our goal of raising $5,000, excess funds will be used for future improvements to infrastructure (based upon an energy efficiency audit) and programmatic needs. On-line donations can be made here.  Check donations can be made payable to “SVBHP”.  Please include “Solar 2022” in the memo line of the check. Send to: SVBHP, 425 Hill Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
